Systematic Theology

At Kingship Church we believe all truth originates and is revealed through God . He Himself is the foundational source of truth which all else hangs (Colossians 1:15-17). By acknowledging so, we will approach all that we explore with a theological perspective that remains God centered. We believe that we will better understand ourselves, one another, meaning, culture and practices when we first look to understanding God.

As a church body, we will have visible practices that are expressions of our faith, such as gathering regularly to exalt God in worship, partake in communion, and perform baptisms. However the focus of our faith is not found in the study and observation of our practices but of our pursuit in the study of God; better known as theology.

The word “theology” references two important Greek words; “theos” which means God and “logos”. Today we commonly define “logos” as “the study of” which is how we arrive at the definition of Theology to be “The study of God”. But “logos” holds a deeper root in its meaning that points us to where we should study from to discover the truth of who God is. “Logos” can also be defined as “the word” or “logic”. It is the same word used in John 1 when it refers to Jesus as the Word of God, being with and God Himself from the beginning. Therefore, we can look to Jesus, His creation, and Scripture as the revealer of who God is ; citing God as the revealer of Himself (John 14:6, 16:13). This is the reason why our statements of faith begin with what we believe to be true about the Bible. (John 17:17)

Systematic Theology looks at Scripture holistically to discover a fuller understanding of God’s nature and character. It’s purpose is to unify the doctrines of the Word of God; identifying a coherent understanding of the teachings of scripture across all of scripture. For example: It is here that we are able to understand God’s nature as the Trinity; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is good work that every believer should engage in; working out their salvation. (Philippians 2:12).

We believe:

Jesus, His creation, and Scripture are the revealed revelation of God (John 10:30, Romans 1:20, Colossians 2:9).

The Bible is the full and complete Word of God (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

That God’s revelation of Himself is consistent with His character and nature (Numbers 23:19, 2 Timothy 2:13, Hebrews 13:8).

That we may come to understand the character and nature of God by the systematic study of the Word of God (1 Corinthians 2:12 - 16, 2 Peter 1:19-21).

Through our understanding of systematic theology we may come to also understand our own identity and purpose as being made in God's image and how to respond in faith and practice (Galatians 2:20, 3:26).

The primary focus of Kingship Church will derive from our pursuit in systematic theology, rather than from a pursuit of religious observation. This will impact our teaching, expression of worship, the vision, and mission of our church.

Biblical Reflection:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. // John 1:1-5

See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, // Colossians 1:8-9

God is not man, that he should lie,

or a son of man, that he should change his mind.

Has he said, and will he not do it?

Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it? // Numbers 23:19

And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. // 2 Peter 1:19-21

"When we engage in the quest to understand God, it is theology. When our quest is limited to understanding how people react to theology, it is religion." // RC Sproul
